The Journey of MOMO MONK

From one steamer to a Kerala institution

Seven years, one obsession, and a fold we still do by hand.

  1. 2019

    One steamer, one street corner

Ram and Anju start with a single bamboo steamer outside a Kakkanad college gate. 40 plates on day one, 400 by the end of the month.

  2. 2020

The lockout that became a kitchen

When the streets emptied, the recipes went out instead. Frozen momos, hand-folded at home, delivered across Kochi — and a chutney that people still ask for.

  3. 2021

    Kerala enters the filling

Pearl spot from the backwaters, coconut, curry leaf, Malabar pepper. The monk stops copying a cuisine and starts speaking in his own accent.

  4. 2023

    Panampilly Nagar opens

Twelve seats, an open kitchen and a tandoor you can watch from the counter. The queue starts at 7pm and nobody seems to mind.

  5. 2026

    24 varieties, one obsession

Over 1.2 lakh momos folded by hand. Same flour, same fold, same seven minutes. Only the filling ever changes.

Why the monk

Four things we refuse to compromise

Folded by hand, every morning

Our chefs fold between 900 and 1,400 momos a day. No machines, no frozen stock — the wrapper is rolled the same morning it is steamed.

01

Kerala in every filling

Coconut, curry leaf, shallot, Malabar pepper, backwater karimeen. We cook momos the way Kerala eats — coastal, peppery, unapologetic.

02

Seven minutes, bamboo steam

Bamboo steamers, timed to seven minutes, served the second they lift. That is why the wrapper stays translucent and never goes doughy.

03

Packed to travel hot

Vented insulated boxes, chutney sealed separately, steam hole on top. Your momos arrive the way they left the steamer.
